Little Clacton Meadow Millennium Green

millenium green daffs

The Meadow Millennium Green is an area of natural beauty situated at the corner of Elm Road and the Street, Little Clacton. It was purchased from the Essex County Council in the Spring of the year 2001 by the Meadow Millennium Green Trust (now a registered charity) at the cost of £10,500. The money was gained from two different sources – The Millennium Commission, brought about by the Government, supported by funds from the National Lottery for such purposes, and Little Clacton Parish Council.

Over the last few years, there has been a great deal of work carried out to update this beautiful area. A new fence has been installed along the Elm Road boundary and around the pond area, picnic tables and seats have been purchased and installed with grants from Tendring District Council, and the pond has been re-lined, again with a grant, and is now a mass of colour with water lilies and it is full of wildlife, including newts, moorhens and a small number of fish. It is picture perfect in the sunlight.

The spinney has continued to thrive and nest boxes, which children from Engaines on visiting told us where they wanted them erected, have been used by the many varieties of birds which frequent the area. During the Spring, wild flowers including bluebells and primroses have carpeted the floor.

The whips, provided by the Woodland Trust, which were planted around the edge of the Millennium Green have taken hold and the blackbirds are enjoying the berries, and it is a joy to see the butterflies and bumble bees on the wild flowers in the meadow area.

We are very grateful to David Wilkin (the owl man) for installing the kestrel and owl boxes and we are hopeful that these will be used in the next few years.

This area of natural beauty is well worth a visit, and thanks must go to the volunteers who work hard to ensure that the experience is as enjoyable as possible. Enjoy walking your dogs but please remember to pick up litter so that everybody can enjoy walking this area. I am pleased that we were able to provide a parking area outside of the Green so that visiting and local vehicles can be taken off of Elm Road.

As Chairman of the Millennium Green, my thanks to all the volunteers and to the community for ensuring that this area remains a special place to visit.
